The Washington Capitals may no longer be the reigning Stanley Cup champions, but that doesn't mean they're not an attractive option for NHL free agents.
Garnet Hathaway, who signed a four-year deal with the Caps Monday, says the strong culture of the team is one of the reasons he chose Washington.
"You really realize the winning culture that's in Washington," Hathaway told Grant Paulsen and Danny Rouhier Tuesday. "It's not just winning the Cup last year, but I think it goes beyond that."

"You can see in the culture they have that they want to win a hockey game, and that's really exciting to be a part of."

Hathaway tallied 19 points last season for the Flames on 11 goals and eight assists and also proved he's no slouch on defense, either: he led Calgary with 200 hits and finished third among Flames forwards in blocked shots.

"I take a lot of pride in my defensive game and taking advantage of offensive chances," Hathaway said. "A big part of my game is the penalty kill as well. I want to be reliable out there, and I want to be difficult to play against."
