Jay Gruden has been formally told he will return as Redskins coach for the 2019 season, JP Finlay reports for NBC Sports Washington.

Jay Gruden has officially been told he’s back as Redskins coach for 2019, per source. This has been expectation among many for weeks.

The news comes after five days of nervous waiting, following Washington's 24-0 shutout loss to the Eagles to close out their 2018 campaign at 7-9 on Sunday.

This season marked the final year of the five-year contract he signed to join the team in Jan. 2014. In 2019, he begins the first year of a two-year contract extension he signed in March 2017, which runs through the 2020 season.

The Redskins are 35-44-1 in five seasons under Gruden and have made the playoffs once, after winning the NFC East in 2015. They have not won a playoff game in that time.
