The Redskins could soon have a brilliant free-agent option at safety.

Giants safety Landon Collins reportedly cleaned out his locker, and said his goodbyes to teammates, on Wednesday, according to Josina Anderson.

This would be MASSIVE. He's one of few players I would spend real money on if I'm the #Redskins. Young, great and an terrific mental make up and at a position of need.Really thought he would be tagged. Sounds like not. https://t.co/BtkSqU6yok

The 25-year-old is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the start of the new league year. The only question is whether the Giants will franchise tag him.

Collins, a second-round pick in 2015, went out of his way coming out of Alabama to speak of Sean Taylor as his hero. Which makes him a shoo-in to gain Redskins fans' favor. Washington selected defensive lineman Preston Smith a few picks later in that draft, and Pro Bowl guard Brandon Scherff the round before.

And in case there was any confusion about Collins cleaning out his locker...

The stuff in that locker that I have left I do not need--

The Redskins have a gaping hole at safety after releasing D.J. Swearinger late in the season, and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix at strong safety, where Collins plays.

Collins is a three-time Pro Bowler with eight career interceptions and one defensive touchdown, but only played in 12 games in 2018 after having surgery to repair a partially torn rotator cuff, an injury he suffered in Week 13.

Free agency officially begins on March 13.
