Nats bring back Asdrubal Cabrera to shore up infield depth

In 2014, Asdrubal Cabrera was a mid-season acquisition by the Nationals, Washington bringing in the veteran to provide some infield depth.

And five years later, history is repeating itself. 

The Nats signed Cabrera to a major-league deal Monday, according to multiple reports. The 33-year-old had been designated for assignment by the Rangers on Aug. 1 after hitting just .235 in 93 games. 

Cabrera didn't put up great numbers in his first stint in D.C., batting .229 with five home runs in 49 games after being brought in from Cleveland. However, this time around Cabrera likely won't be asked to start as many games as he did in 2014.

With Howie Kendrick on the injured list, Cabrera fills his utility infielder role on the bench. He played exclusively at third base with Texas but has also played second base and shortstop throughout his 13-year MLB career. 
It's not the most exciting signing, but could prove to be an important one as the Nats battle with a number of other NL teams for one of the two wild card spots. 

And "second time's the charm" as the saying goes, right?
