The Nationals will celebrate Jayson Werth, who retired on Wednesday after 21 years, by honoring him with a tribute night at Nats Park.

The Nationals plan on honoring Jayson Werth with a tribute night in September. Exact date hasn't been decided. Mark Lerner personally spoke with Werth today about it.

Werth played seven of his 16 Major League seasons for the Nationals. As their first marquee free-agent signing before the 2011 season, Werth was instrumental in reshaping the environment around the club, which hadn't so much as made a playoff appearance in six seasons prior to him joining the organization.

As a way of saying thanks, the Nats will pay homage to Werth's career. Although it has not zeroed in on a date, the club is targeting a night in September.

Longtime Nats radio announcers Charlie Slowes and Dave Jageler paid their own tribute to Werth's time in Washington ahead of Thursday's Nats-Phillies broadcast.
