Max Scherzer placed on 10-day Injured List, will miss Braves series

Nationals place Max Scherzer on 10-day Injured List
Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports

The Nationals have placed injured starter Max Scherzer on the 10-day Injured List – retroactive to Friday, July 26 – with a mild rhomboid strain.

Washington has recalled right-handed pitcher Erick Fedde from Double-A Harrisburg as the corresponding move.

Scherzer last pitched last Thursday against Colorado, after going 18 days without pitching – from the time he pitched seven scoreless innings against the Royals on July 6 – due to a back injury that first surfaced around his June 30 start in Detroit. Scherzer skipped the All-Star Game on July 14 and has already had one IL stint due to bursa inflammation in his right shoulder.

Nats skipper Dave Martinez on Sunday said Scherzer was "very doubtful" to make his next scheduled start Tuesday against the Braves. Scherzer was supposed to throw a bullpen session Sunday after receiving a stem-cell injection, but that never happened. Instead he'll be going to the IL for the second time this month.

The Nationals begin a three-game series Monday against the Braves, who they trail by 5.5 games in the NL East.

Scherzer will not be eligible to pitch again until Washington's series in San Francisco next week.
