Report: Nats re-sign Howie Kendrick

The Washington Nationals are re-signing World Series hero Howie Kendrick, according to multiple media reports.

Kendrick, who was named MVP of the NLCS and hit the go-ahead two-run homer in Game 7 of the World Series, has agreed to a one-year deal worth $6.25 million, according to Radio.com Sports Insider Bob Nightengale.

The Washington Post's Jesse Dougherty reported the deal is expected to include a mutual option for the 2021 season.

The Washington #Nats bring back Howie Kendrick, he signs one-year, $6.25 million contract. Deal is official.

Don't expect the Nationals to pull this all the way through, but ... so far, their offseason efforts have been geared toward keeping the 2019 band together. First Yan Gomes comes back for two years/$10 million. Now Howie Kendrick is on his way.

The Nationals will likely use Kendrick to play first base this season, where he played 48 games in 2019. The Nationals could still re-sign Ryan Zimmerman to platoon at first and use Kendrick at second, as well.

Kendrick was a key cog in the Nationals lineup during the regular season, batting .344/.395/.572  and a 142 OPS+ with 17 home runs and 62 RBIs. In 17 games in the postseason, Kendrick had four doubles, two home runs, and 12 batted in while slashing .286/.328/.444.

Kendrick joined the Nationals before the 2018 season, which was cut short due to an Achilles injury. He turns 37 in July.
