Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports

The Nationals have reinstated right-handed pitcher Max Scherzer from the 10-day Injured List, President of Baseball Ops. and General Manager Mike Rizzo announced Thursday.

Scherzer will make his first start since July 25 – after which he was placed on the IL (retroactive to July 26) with a mild upper back strain (rhomboid muscle) – Thursday night against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Prior to his IL stint, Scherzer, 35, had gone 9-5 with a 2.41 ERA and 189 strikeouts in 20 starts for the Nationals this season.

Washington also reinstated second baseman Brian Dozier from the Paternity List, and optioned right-handed pitcher Kyle McGowin and infielder Adrian Sanchez to Double-A Harrisburg.

Dozier, 32, is hitting .236 with 19 doubles, 19 home runs, 45 RBI, 52 walks, three stolen bases and 49 runs scored.

McGowin, 27, has appeared in seven games – including one start – for the Nationals in 2019 and has a 10.13 ERA.

Sanchez, 29, has hit .241 with one RBI, one walk and two runs scored in 26 games for the Nationals this season.
