Nationals reinstate Ryan Zimmerman, demote Michael A. Taylor

Nationals reinstate Ryan Zimmerman, demote Michael A. Taylor
Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

Nationals first baseman Ryan Zimmerman returns to the lineup after missing 53 games with plantar fasciitis in his right foot.

Zimmerman was reinstated ahead of the Nationals' series opener in Detroit on Friday, allowing him the opportunity to ease back into the lineup as Washington's designated hitter in the American League ballpark.

Needing to make a corresponding move, the Nationals deemed outfielder Michael A. Taylor the odd-man out by optioning him to Double-A Harrisburg.

Zimmerman will make his first appearance in a Nationals uniform since April 27. Prior to the injury, he hit .213 with three doubles, three home runs, 11 RBI and 10 walks in 22 games.

Taylor, 28, is batting .211 with five doubles, two RBI, seven walks and four stolen bases in 85 plate appearances for the Nats in 2019. An unfortunate setback for Taylor:

Unfortunate timing for Taylor, who has family in the area and more driving up for the series. Said last week there was going to be north of 70 people at Saturday's game in Detroit for him.
