The Nationals bolstered their bullpen with the signing of left-handed reliever Tony Sipp Wednesday, according to multiple reports.

It’s a one-year deal with a mutual option for 2020 for Sipp, per source. Adds another lefty to a bullpen that needed it. https://t.co/eTz10JwslZ

A 10-year veteran, Sipp pitched for the Astros the last five seasons. The 35-year old had a strong 2018 season, compiling a 3-1 record, 1.86 ERA and 1.034 WHIP in 54 appearances.

Washington was in need of another left-handed reliever after releasing Sammy Solis. The only other southpaws in the Nats bullpen are Matt Grace and closer Sean Doolittle.

Sipp was great last season for Houston (1.86 ERA, 1.034 WHIP), held lefties to .191 AVG, .557 OPS. Nats have been reluctant in past to spend money on lefty matchup guys, but they've been burned by not having one for a while now.

Tony Sipp signed by #Nats per @dougherty_jesse (I believe he was first on it) --- Situational, veteran lefty who will likely be a 1-2 AB per game guy. Think Sipp vs. Harper in the 6th after Strasburg inevitably struggles to get to the 7th.
