The Nationals are calling up veteran reliever Fernando Rodney ahead Tuesday's series opener against the Marlins, Jesse Dougherty reports for The Washington Post.
The 42-year-old right-handed reliever, who signed a minor-league deal with Washington on June 1, has allowed four earned runs in nine appearances (eight innings) for Triple-A Fresno, commanding a 4.50 ERA with 11 strikeouts and nine walks. Rodney opened the year with Oakland, but was designated for assignment in late May after pitching to a 9.42 ERA in 14 1/3 innings.
The Nationals, after optioning Erick Fedde to Fresno after Sunday's game, have an open spot on their 25-man roster, and an open spot on their 40-man after releasing Trevor Rosenthal on Sunday.
By leaving him on their roster, the Nats appear to be giving their vote of confidence to 26-year-old Austin Voth, who impressed with six innings of two-run ball, in which he struck out seven Braves batters on Sunday.
Their three-game series in Miami starts Tuesday at 7:10 p.m.
UPDATE: The Nationals are also calling up 34-year-old left-handed reliever Jonny Venters from Double-A Harrisburg, sources tell 106.7 The Fan's Grant Paulsen.
Source tells me the #Nats are also calling up 34-year-old lefty Johnny Venters today as well. He and Rodney, 42, will be with the team for tonight's game. Venters has pitched 7 times at Double-A.
