This quite possibly is the most fired up Eric Bickel has been about a sports-related topic for some time.
What got EB so fired up? Undrafted wide receiver Steven Sims out of Kansas, of course.
"They have a terrible receiving corps," Bickel said Friday. "No one is saying that Steve Sims is god, he's redefining the position. What we're saying is, they have a terrible receiving corps, no explosive players, (players) who can't stay healthy, all of them. (Sims is) at least a guy that has a burst, that has explosion, that everybody talked about in camp. And we can make fun of the receivers every year that look good in camp, but he's actually done it in the preseason games."
"He's the only guy I'm passionate about," he added.
"If you pay any attention to what Jay's been saying, he loves what he does when he gets the ball in his hands," EB continued. "They just don't have enough of those guys."
"You talk about guys who could take it to the house, he could take it to the house anytime he touches it," EB said about Sims.
In the Redskins' preseason finale, Sims tallied a seven-yard touchdown grab on two targets, but that's not when Bickel first took notice of the young receiver.
"I didn't know about him until I went to Richmond. I'll be honest, he's the first guy I saw and I went, 'Who's that guy streaking down the sideline?''' Bickel said. "They were just doing one-on-ones and that sort of thing. And Hoffman told me, he said, 'That's Steven Sims, he's the fastest guy here other than (Terry) McLaurin.' And I have just kept an eye on him the whole time."
"I'm standing on the table for him," Bickel said.
