Report: Redskins decline to restructure Dunbar contract

The Washington Redskins troublesome secondary has only become more troublesome during the offseason.

Cornerback Quinton Dunbar "remains resolute" in his desire to be traded or released by the Redskins after the team declined to engage in contract talks, per ESPN's Josina Anderson.

Sources close to #Redskins CB Quinton Dunbar tell me that he had reached out to the team to discuss a reasonable contract restructure but the club declined the conversation. Dunbar remains resolute in his desire to be released or traded.

Dunbar originally made this request to be traded in early February, with ESPN's John Keim reporting, "Dunbar spoke with a member of the Redskins' administration tonight. He had been in talks with the previous regime about an extension but he had not had any contact with the Redskins since the hiring of coach Ron Rivera."

It was originally reported the fifth-year corner was going to sit out the team's OTAs in the hope of avoiding injury.

"One source explained that for many Redskins players, watching linebacker Reuben Foster go down with a potentially career-ending knee and leg injury in last year's OTAs left a significant impression about the value of voluntary work," 106.7 The Fan contributor and NBC Sports Washington's J.P. Finlay reported. "It's unclear that Dunbar would even want a new contract now or if he would prefer to face unrestricted free agency one year from now."

Dunbar, who will turn 28 in July, is entering the final season of the three-year contract extension he signed in Jan. 2018 and carries a $4.4 million cap hit for the 2020 season.. He joined the Redskins after going undrafted out of Florida in 2015 and has become one of the better contributors in Washington's secondary.

Dunbar will cost the Redskins $1 million if they decide to release him.
