Redskins-Eagles: Adrian Peterson, Jordan Reed inactive
Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

The Redskins will be without two of their top playmakers from last season during their 2019 regular season opener in Philadelphia on Sunday.

Tight end Jordan Reed will be held out against the Eagles due to lingering concussion symptoms, while running back Adrian Peterson will be inactive, with Derrius Guice expected to receive the bulk of the carries for Washington Sunday.

The Redskins have now officially announced today's inactives. Add QB Colt McCoy, CB Fabian Moreau, C Ross Pierschbacher, G Wes Martin and DT Treyvon Hester to the mix.

Peterson's inactive status lends credence to a report by The Sports Junkies on Tuesday, which indicated Redskins coach Jay Gruden was pushing to release Peterson on cutdown day, primarily because the 34-year-old future Hall of Famer "doesn't like being a backup."

Gruden has said the offense – "carries-wise" – will go through Guice this week.

If Adrian Peterson being inactive today (per @JPFinlayNBCS) doesn't give credence to the report that Jay Gruden wanted to cut him, nothing will. How many weeks of being inactive after rushing for 1,000 yards last year before he gets annoyed by it?

Expecting apology tweets from the maniacs who attacked us when we said there was a real debate about actually releasing him at cut down time. (Those guys lie. They make up stories. They're just haters. Etc.) Ill keep waiting... https://t.co/SpRvY8QECc

Reed suffered a concussion in Washington's third preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons, at least his sixth documented concussion of his football career.

The Redskins were initially optimistic about Reed after he responded well to increased activity this week, a requirement of the NFL's concussion protocol.
