The Redskins have notified Josh Doctson they will not be picking up the receiver's fifth-year option, JP Finlay reports for NBC Sports Washington.

Fifth-year options are only available to first-round picks and must be exercised heading into the player's fourth NFL season.

The Redskins had until May 3 to give Doctson written notice if they were going to pick up his fifth-year option. By informing him they will not be doing so, this means Doctson, the 22nd overall pick in 2016, will become an unrestricted free agent of the 2019 season. The Redskins could have picked up Doctson's option as early as Dec. 31, 2018.

This decision was made a long time ago, but them telling him is news.As I said on CDVTW, there is no reason to. He's never hitting his 5th year option salary # in FA. Why risk him getting hurt and having to pay it. https://t.co/i02z8CBnJe
