Gregg Williams will not be returning to D.C., despite a last-minute effort on the part of the Redskins to interview him for defensive coordinator.
Williams, 60, is finalizing a deal to take the same position with the Jets, Adam Schefter reports.
Washington also pursued DC Gregg Williams, per sources. But Adam Gase and the NY Jets wanted Williams more. Now Gase and Williams form a formidable tandem.
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) January 15, 2019While Williams-to-the-Jets reports began to surface last week, his window reopened for the Redskins on Monday. As the Jets were formally introducing new head coach Adam Gase, Gase would not comment on any intention to bring Williams on board. Hours earlier, JP Finlay reported that Williams's contract with the Jets was not a done deal, and the Redskins were hopeful about setting a meeting with him as early as Tuesday.
It's Tuesday, and Williams' deal with the Jets is done. Washington has failed three times to land a new defensive coordinator this offseason, having met with Todd Bowles and Steve Wilks, who signed on to coach the Buccaneers' and Browns' defenses, respectively.
Williams served as Washington's defensive coordinator for four seasons under Joe Gibbs (2004-07). Once thought to be the natural successor to Gibbs, the Redskins instead hired Jim Zorn as head coach in 2008. Despite Dan Snyder's apparent effort to patch up his relationship with Williams in the years since, some still viewed that pairing as a mismatch.
.@JPFinlayNBCS on #RedskinsTalk pod: #Redskins "trying like hell" to meet with GW today. "It appears, by all accounts, that Dan Snyder and Gregg Williams are on very good terms now… Those two have patched up their relationship, is my understanding."
— Burgundy Blog (@BurgundyBlog) January 15, 2019Gregg Williams is heading to Jets as DC. No matter who said what about Redskins and Williams loving each other, it would have been a bad match. Williams is a good DC, but Redskins front office couldn't handle him 10 years ago or now.
— Rick Snider (@Snide_Remarks) January 15, 2019The Redskins are reportedly set to interview Broncos defensive coordinator Joe Woods for their defensive backs position. Woods was also scheduled to meet with Arizona, San Francisco and Jacksonville.
After interviewing in Arizona yesterday, former Broncos D-coordinator Joe Woods will likely visit Jax, Washington and possibly one other team before making decision midweek. All interested in him as DB or DB+. #9sports
