The Redskins are parting ways with longtime personnel executive Scott Campbell, Chris Russell of 106.7 The Fan has confirmed.
RUSSELL: Being A 'Great Guy' Got The Best Of Campbell
The decision to move on from Campbell -- whose contract had expired -- came from Doug Williams, Senior Vice President of Player Personnel, Russell reports.
Per @1067theFan sources: Senior Personnel Executive Scott Campbell's contract had expired, so that's why the #Redskins and he parted ways as @ProFootballTalk first reported. Was with the #Skins for 17 years. Hearing Doug Williams made main part of this decision.
— Chris Russell (@Russellmania621) May 9, 2018Former #Redskins Senior Personnel Exec Scott Campbell confirms via text to @1067theFan his departure. "Chris, I can confirm Doug Williams called to tell me that my contract would not be renewed. I loved my 17 years with the club."
— Chris Russell (@Russellmania621) May 9, 2018Campbell has served as Washington's Senior Personnel Executive since June 2017 and previously served as the team's Director of College Scouting. He's been with the organization for 17 years and in the NFL for 32.
Campbell's Redskins.com bio credits him with setting the draft board for the team's "highly acclaimed 2017 draft class," which included defensive lineman Jonathan Allen, linebacker Ryan Anderson, running back Samaje Perine, safety Montae Nicholson and tight end Jeremy Sprinkle. Campbell is still listed as a member of the front office on the website.
This is true. He had also talked about possibly retiring after this year. Skins don't feel they need to replace. Have inside parts they can shift around; promote, etc. SC's role changed under Scot M. SC did run a lot of draft in 17; others had increased roles then too https://t.co/Ft1R5E3lcP
— John Keim (@john_keim) May 9, 2018Check that: Took over that role last June for this year. so was in charge of it for this draft. Brings energy/passion among other attributes to the job. Had a good draft too. SC a good guy; scouts not always heard. recall him being a big Moses fan.
— John Keim (@john_keim) May 9, 2018The move could have something to do with protecting current Director of College Personnel, Kyle Smith, who's garnered significant interest from other clubs. Smith was highly involved in the Redskins' 2018 draft class, which graded out highly among league circles and included Alabama defensive lineman Da'Ron Payne and LSU running back Derrius Guice with the team's top two picks.
To me, this is about Kyle Smith. That dude is a rising star. As I just talked about with @chaddukes, the view of him around the league is that he's a surefire future GM. #Redskins want that to happen here if it's gonna happen soon.
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) May 9, 2018This is absolutely 1000% correct. Lots of interest from multiple teams on Kyle Smith. #Redskins have to do whatever it takes to keep him. The #NFL knows already. Scott Campbell was a terrific mentor for him & brought him into organization. https://t.co/prDUsIT3eY
— Chris Russell (@Russellmania621) May 9, 2018Reports on Redskins parting with top scout Scott Campbell to clear way for Kyle Smith to stay is interesting. But Bruce Allen isn't interested in helping successor. I'd look harder at this.
— Rick Snider (@Snide_Remarks) May 9, 2018Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio was first to report on the personnel change.
