It finally happened.
The Redskins, who previously had hoped to receive a high draft pick in exchange for the seven-time Pro Bowl left tackle, will have to settle for a 2020 5th-round draft pick and a 2021 3rd-round draft pick. Williams will reunite with former Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. It is likely they will restructure the soon-to-be 32-year-old left tackle's contract, which has one year remaining.
Williams' agent Vincent Taylor said in a statement after the trade after nine years in Washington, "the time has come to part ways."
"Trent Williams is ready to get back to competing in the NFL and is glad to be a part of a great organization like the San Francisco 49ers," said in a statement.
The saga began before the 2019 season, with Williams did not report for mandatory minicamp in June 2019. Williams sat for the entire 2019 season. He revealed the full story of how the relationship broke down
with 106.7 The Fan's Craig Hoffman in November. At the time, before
Bruce Allen was fired by the organization and
Ron Rivera was hired as head coach, Williams said the
bridge was burned.
Rivera and Washington wasted no time in drafting a replacement in LSU's
Saahdiq Charles with the
108th overall pick in the NFL Draft.
Finally: The #Redskins have agreed to terms on a trade of LT Trent Williams to the #49ers, per me, @TomPelissero & @MikeGarafolo. It took until Day 3 of the Draft, but Washington gets it done, and SF gets help at a position of need. It’s for a 5th this year and 3rd next year.

April 25, 2020 One big piece of this: Had the #Vikings done the deal with Trent Williams, he would’ve gotten an extension. With the #49ers, no extension is included in the deal and none is imminent.

April 25, 2020 The Niners have been working on the Trent Williams deal for a while. Delicate all the way thru. There were obviously issues between Williams (who wanted to go to SF) and Redskins ownership. And the Shanahans aren't warm-and-fuzzy with Dan Snyder either. In the end, it gets done.

April 25, 2020 I’ll say this - Redskins trading Trent to the Niners shows that Ron Rivera is firmly in charge. A few years back Bruce Allen wouldn’t even talk with SF about a possible Kirk Cousins trade because of past history with Kyle Shanahan. Growth for the organization.

April 25, 2020 Trent Williams and the 49ers are expected to restructure the last year on his contract, per source. But Williams will report and will play for SF this season.

April 25, 2020 Trent Williams will be remembered differently based on the last year, understandably. But he had a tremendous run in Washington. Don't forget that. One of the toughest and best players I've ever covered. The 49ers got a stellar OT today, which Kyle Shanahan already knows.

April 25, 2020 I want what's best for the team. That said, as life long Redskins fan that also talks about them everyday for a living, I am beyond thrilled Trent Williams is gone. It feels like opening a window on the first day of spring after a long winter.

April 25, 2020 There's likely no way Bruce Allen would have traded Williams to San Francisco. He had been determined not to let Kirk Cousins go join Kyle Shanahan, so the same would have likely applied to Williams.

April 25, 2020 Do you like the Trent Williams trade for the @Redskins? They were able to acquire a 5th rounder this year and a 3rd rounder in 2021?
