Another Redskins season is finally upon us, as 2018 training camp is underway in Richmond.
Sunday, July 29
It's Sunday, and you know what means – football! This morning, Gruden gave an update on Jordan Reed's progress, and right now things are looking good for the Pro Bowl tight end.
Jay on Jordan Reed: "He's in and out of his cuts like he hasn't lost anything."Adding to the good news -"We could probably practice him full go if we wanted to."Obviously they won't yet, but nice to know they could.
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) July 29, 2018On the other end of the ball, Mason Foster appeared to pick up a knock during this morning's practice, but it doesn't look too serious.
Mason Foster went down in the first snap of team drills. He was taken to the tent. Vigil came in to replace him at Mike.
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) July 29, 2018Foster on the sidelines with helmet on. Standing up. Looks fine. https://t.co/Le7EwIfndB
— John Keim (@john_keim) July 29, 2018His absence provided some extra reps for Zach Vigil, just one of several middle linebackers fighting for a roster spot behind Foster and Zach Brown.
The name of the game today in practice has been one-on-one, red zone competition between defensive backs and receivers. Paul Richardson has impressed so far, making several great grabs.

— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) July 29, 2018And check out Josh Doctson juking out Josh Norman!
The moves by @JDoc_son! #SkinsCamp #HTTR pic.twitter.com/80sSWmjAZW
— Washington Redskins (@Redskins) July 29, 2018Not to be outdone, the secondary has made several strong plays, in particular Quinton Dunbar and D.J. Swearinger. Swearinger also showed off his punting skills after intercepting a pass intended for Reed.
Quinton Dunbar with the tight coverage! #SkinsCamp #HTTR pic.twitter.com/FbkiOahtHI

— Washington Redskins (@Redskins) July 29, 2018And on top of all the highlight-reel plays, a fight broke out at practice this morning.
First fight of camp got real between tight end Matt Flanagan and linebacker Vontae Diggs. No clear winner. . . . Mason Foster was dinged early in practice, but walked around OK later. . . . Running back Martez Carter looked solid inside all morning, but long shot for team.
— Rick Snider (@Snide_Remarks) July 29, 2018The morning practice has concluded, and with rain in the forecast, today's afternoon walkthrough has been cancelled.
#Redskins walk-through is cancelled with pending weather this afternoon in Richmond.
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) July 29, 2018There won't be any more on-field action until Tuesday morning, as camp will be closed tomorrow.
Here's what Foster had to say about the injury he suffered earlier this morning.
Mason Foster told me as he came off that his injury is something on his side. Either rib or oblique. Should have clarity later.
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) July 29, 2018Since there's no afternoon walkthrough to watch, check out Craig Hoffman's interview with Jordan Reed. Reed goes into detail on his injury struggles of the last year and explains how he's completely rebuilt his body ahead of the 2018 season.
Saturday, July 28
The weekend is here, and so is day three of Redskins training camp. First off, Gruden provided a few injury updates in his morning press conference.
Jay Gruden to the podium in Richmond. DaRon Payne is in a boot after getting his ankle stepped on yesterday. He's out at least a week. Gruden is not concerned though. Says Payne is in great shape and knows the defense already.
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) July 28, 2018More injury updates: Ryan Anderson (back spasms) might return Sunday... LB Zach Brown remains day to day with a quad injury. Gruden said it was nothing serious...
— John Keim (@john_keim) July 28, 2018Payne's early health struggles will undoubtedly draw comparisons to those last year of Jonathan Allen, who was also a defensive lineman out of Alabama drafted in the first round by Washington. Allen missed much of the 2017 season with a Lisfranc injury.
On the field, Jordan Reed has continued to increase his workload, including more one-on-one action today.
Jordan Reed will continue to ramp up with pads coming on today. Gruden says he'll get 4-5 one-on-one reps today. He only had two yesterday.
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) July 28, 2018Jordan Reed. pic.twitter.com/ZRjl7qo2nn
— John Keim (@john_keim) July 28, 2018Another notable participant in team drills was Zach Brown, who picked up a quad strain on Thursday and has been day-to-day.
Brown wasn't in the first team period, but he did participate in 7-on-7. https://t.co/YdNrlJrJgw
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) July 28, 2018Zach Brown is doing full team work.
— John Keim (@john_keim) July 28, 2018Orlando Scandrick was missing from Saturday's morning session. His absence provided opportunities for the likes of Fabian Moreau, one of several cornerbacks fighting for a spot on the final roster.
Scandrick is out today. Might just be a vet day. With limited reps, they might've decided it's more important for other guys to get work.
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) July 28, 2018Related: with Scandrick and Holsey our, Moreau is getting nickel reps. He only played there in practice last year.
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) July 28, 2018Alex Smith provided more highlight-reel throws this morning, linking up with Paul Richardson and Jamison Crowder on some of the particularly impressive passes.
Some toe drag swag from @prichiejr --#SkinsCamp #HTTR pic.twitter.com/taqGkfqqts
— Washington Redskins (@Redskins) July 28, 2018Smith just delivered a ridiculous ball in 7-on-7 over the outstretched arm of Moreau to Richardson right underneath Norman. #ToeDragSwag for Richardson.
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) July 28, 2018Smith with the goods off schedule as he finds Crowder over the top for a touchdown. He does such a great job of keeping his eyes downfield. Receivers are never dead, which has to be fun for them.
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) July 28, 2018And here's why Scandrick missed today's morning practice:
Injury update: Orlando Scandrick was out today with an injury. He has back spasms.
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) July 28, 2018Correction: Redskins PR has now told reporters that Scandrick is not hurt, but was given a scheduled veteran's day off. Ryan Anderson, whose given first name is Orlando, is the one suffering from back spasms.
FYI: Orlando Scandrick had a veteran's day off. Was NOT because of his back. The plan is to have him go 2 days on, one off. So it was a planned day off today.
— John Keim (@john_keim) July 28, 2018Thursday, July 26
Jay Gruden caused some concern during his press conference Wednesday, telling reporters that Josh Doctson had undergone an MRI on his Achilles. However, Doctson looks good and is participating fully in practice.
Josh Doctson is in uniform and ready to go. Looks like the Achilles is just fine. pic.twitter.com/gxe7cqrNeL
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) July 26, 2018Josh Doctson pic.twitter.com/1pV0My562x
— John Keim (@john_keim) July 26, 2018Oft-injured tight end Jordan Reed is also going hard in drills. Gruden said Wednesday Reed and others recovering from injuries such as Trent Williams and Morgan Moses will be on plans throughout camp to make sure they stay healthy.

— John Keim (@john_keim) July 26, 2018The weather has been a major topic of discussion heading into training camp, with rain in the forecast throughout this week and next. According to 106.7 The Fan columnist Rick Snider, the wet weather has already put its stamp on training camp.
Fields look ok, but let's see better day's end. Very wet, sidelines a mess. Never seen it like this. #Redskins
— Rick Snider (@Snide_Remarks) July 26, 2018While Doctson and Reed are moving well, the same cannot be said for linebacker Zach Brown.
Zach Brown limping after the second 11-on-11 snap. Trained looking at his leg. Now in the trainer's tent. #Redskins
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) July 26, 2018Brown led the Redskins in tackles last year with 84. He's back on the practice field, but it doesn't look like he'll return to action today.
Trainers putting a big ice wrap on his upper knee. Maybe his thigh. Brown not happy but able to walk and move around. pic.twitter.com/2pWiG3HSms
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) July 26, 2018An update on Brown's condition:
Zack Brown suffered a strained quad about 45 minutes into practice. Was not happy walking into treatment tent. Day to day.
— Rick Snider (@Snide_Remarks) July 26, 2018The first morning practice of training camp is over. Doctson provided one of the highlights of the session, hauling in a pinpoint pass from Alex Smith.
11 ➡️ 18.On the money. #HTTR pic.twitter.com/qL92jF0NJz
— Washington Redskins (@Redskins) July 26, 2018Here are Snider's initial impressions of the Redskins after Thursday morning's practice:
What did I get out of a non-contact opening Redskins practice? Smith looked better downfield than I saw in OTAs. Not even close. Dropped a dime on Doctson in corner. . . . Linebacker Pete Robertson arm tackles dummies like a hammer hits an anvil . . .
— Rick Snider (@Snide_Remarks) July 26, 2018All Redskins receiver Trey Quinn does is catch balls. I see him making the roster. . . . Offensive tackle Trent Williams looked effortless. . . . Smith is at the podium.
