Williams, 30, did not appear at the Redskins' mandatory minicamp which began Tuesday afternoon. He is heading into the fourth year of a five-year, $68 million contract extension he signed in Aug. 2015, and is still owed $24 million over the next two seasons.

When healthy, Williams remains one of the top left tackles in the NFL, but he's missed 15 games over the past four seasons, playing in just 49 of 64 possible regular-season games in that span.

Williams is likely utilizing the leverage he still has, as he'll be 32 when his current deal expires after the 2020 season.

Redskins coach Jay Gruden addressed Williams' absence after practice.

Jay Gruden said he talked to Trent Williams. “I want him back in the worst way but there is a business side to it,” Gruden said.
