Listening to someone explain Plantar fasciitis is abominable and doesn't come recommended.
It's an injury that's plagued Ryan Zimmerman on the back half of his career and will continue to, however long he plays, and it reared its ugly head again on Sunday.
Washington's 34-year-old first baseman has since been placed on the injured list for the second time this season, only this time, the Nationals hope, his stay won't nearly approach the two-month duration of his last IL visit.
"Yeah, the Plantar fasciitis creeped up again," Nats GM Mike Rizzo told The Sports Junkies during his weekly appearance, presented by Burke & Herbert Bank.
"You know, it's kind of a nuisance type of injury for him. It's a tear in his Plantar fasciitis," he said. "It's almost a complete rupture of it, which is almost a good thing because it's something that can free him up to where it could be very – it's a pain tolerance type of thing right now. And he's working through it."
"He was walking around the clubhouse better than he and I both expected him to," Rizzo added. "So we're thinking that it's not gonna be as long as the last time he was on the disabled list. We're looking forward to getting him back. I don't want to put a timetable on it, but we're wholeheartedly that he'll be helping us some time this season, and we're not sure exactly when, but hopefully sooner rather than later."
Rizzo also mentioned that Zimmerman's "doing well" and "keeps it very even keel."
"He's played a lot of games for this organization and sacrificed a lot for the organization, played through a lot of pain," he said. "I've seen what it takes for him to get ready for a game, and I've seen what he's gone through in the past by getting ready, taking shots and wanting to be on the field."
"That's one of those things that have to heal on its own," Rizzo said when asked about the nature of the injury. "But they're kind of better when they fully rupture, because it takes the pain... then it's just a pain tolerance thing. It's not something that can hinder your performance."
