Smokin' Al Koken is glad that Ovi breaking the record on the road was at least well-received by the crowd

Smokin’ Al Koken has been rinkside for a good chunk of Ovi’s Chase for 895, and was there on Sunday when Ovechkin finally got the record-breaker on Long Island – and we all saw what the celebration looked like on the ice.

But what many didn’t see, that Al did, is that once the guys had celebrated in the locker room, and then packed up and headed home…it didn’t stop.

And, as Al, like many, would ideally have loved to see it happen at Capital One Arena, he’s at least glad what we saw in New York was support for Ovi making hockey history.

“It was astounding how many Capitals fans made their way in there, and you saw what the prices were on the secondary market – it was like going to a Stanley Cup Final game; even the non-Capitals fans wanted to be there to watch Alex break the record,” Koken said. “I had a hunch they would be receptive. We saw it two games previous in Carolina when he scored, even though that’s a great rivalry. Friday night was so special, and it’s not like Washington got completely cheated – there was a split there that actually worked out on both sides; you got the largest television and media market in the country in New York getting the actual record, and in Washington, you got to celebrate him at least tying it and out on the ice waving to everybody.”

Take a listen to Koken’s entire visit with BMitch & Finlay above!
