The 2024-25 Jack Adams Award winner is sticking around DC for a while, as the Washington Capitals announced Thursday they have signed head coach Spencer Carbery to a multi-year extension.

“We are pleased to extend Spencer to a new multi-year contract,” Caps GM Chris Patrick said in the team’s release. “Since joining our organization, Spencer has played an important role in the development of many of our young players while also earning the respect and trust of our veteran leaders. His communication skills, strong relationship-building, and ability to connect with players at every stage of their careers have made him a great leader of our club. In addition, he has helped foster a positive and accountable culture within our team, creating an environment where players can grow and succeed. We have been extremely impressed with his commitment, professionalism, and passion for coaching, and we are excited to see him continue building on that success.”

Carbery, 44, is 134-83-29 in three seasons with Washington, with playoff appearances in the first two seasons and a near-miss with 95 points this year.

His Adams Award made him the only coach to ever win a league’s respective Coach of the Year Awards in the NHL, AHL (2020-21 with Caps affiliate Hershey), and ECHL (2013-14 with the South Carolina Stingrays), and he is the fourth-fastest coach to 100 wins in Caps franchise history.

He now will get to lead a 2026-27 Caps team that has two restricted and three unrestricted free agents – the biggest of the bunch of course being Alexander Ovechkin, whose future is uncertain but will apparently be doted on more next month – and about $31 million in cap space to look to upgrade the squad.
