Capitals sign Nic Dowd to two-year, $6 million extension

It’s too bad Nic Dowd’s weekly segment with The Junkies has ended for the season, because this would’ve been a GREAT lead this week: Dowder is sticking around for two more years!

The Capitals announced Wednesday that they have agreed to a two-year contract extension worth $6 million, carrying a $3 million average annual value.

"Nic has been an integral member of our team, both on the ice and in our leadership group, and we are excited to extend his contract for an additional two years," GM Chris Patrick said in the team release announcing the extension. "During his time in Washington, Nic has proven to be a consistent and reliable two-way player who can be trusted in all situations. This signing solidifies our depth at the critical center position as we move forward. Off the ice, Nic has been a consummate professional and has made significant contributions to our community through his charitable efforts."

Dowd, 34, has played all 81 of the Caps’ games this year and notched career highs with 14 goals and 27 points. He has been a key on the penalty kill, as well, leading the Caps in short-handed ice time per game (2:35) and tied for second with two short-handed goals.

This is his seventh season in Washington, and was set to be the last one on his current deal before becoming an unrestricted free agent this summer – but now, he’s sticking around through at least 2026-27.
