Jakob Chychrun, Caps marvel at Ovi's scoring prowess…even if they don't discuss his chase for history

Big win for the Capitals Tuesday night over a Red Wings team that’s trying to stay in the playoff hunt, and as has been the case all year, they got scoring punch from all over the lineup – yet none from Alex Ovechkin, who remains seven away from tying and eight away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record.

When defenseman Jakob Chychrun, who is closing in on a 20-goal season himself, joined Danny & Tobi Wednesday for his weekly spot, they asked just how much even his teammates are marveling that Ovi, at age 39, is leading the team in tallies and a handful away from history.

Even if, as Chychrun told the guys, they don’t talk much about the chase outside of when they’re asked in the media, because the task at hand is trying to win a Stanley Cup.

"We don't really talk about it. It’s something that’s obviously a huge deal, but in the room, we just don’t think about it or talk about it,” Chychrun said. “I think when you're out there and you got an opportunity to find him, you're gonna find him - you'd probably be doing that whether he's on the chase or not, because he's the best goal scorer of all-time and can really be a game changer, so you want to have the puck on his stick when he's in those high-danger scoring areas. But, for the most part, it’s not something we’re obsessed with; we just like to focus on what we have to do as a team, and the rest of that stuff takes care of itself, like it has for his whole career. So, yeah, we're obviously excited for him and pulling for him, but it's not something that we talk about internally too much.”
