Spencer Carbery gives the Junks a slight update on Alex Ovechkin's injury

Spencer Carbery didn't have much new news on Alex Ovechkin when he joined The Junkies for his weekly segment Wednesday, but he did confirm what the team had said on Tuesday.

"He's gonna be out for a little bit. He's gonna see our doctors today, and then we'll have a better idea of timeline and the injury, and I'm sure we'll have more," Carbery said. "This isn't something where his season is ending, I think week-to-week is pretty accurate. I think our doctors want to see him and assess the injury, and then we'll go from there. I don't think anybody wants to come out and say, 'hey, it's gonna be this, this and this,' we just want to make sure that everything is accurate and anything that's put out there isn't just hearsay. We'll have an update and it'll, it'll get out there as soon as possible."

And, as the guys tried to get Carbs to confirm it wasn't a torn ACL, or address some rumors about what it is, he said it was just a freak thing that happens in the league.

"It was an unfortunate collision. I watched it a bunch, and you're looking to see if there's any type of purposeful contact there from McBain, and I don't know," Carbery said. "I just think he gets a little bit out of control with his skating and his route where he was, and he's a little bit reckless there, but I don't think anything when I watched the back was purposeful."

Of course, the Caps stepped up to handle things themselves, which Tom Wilson did later in that third period by fighting with McBain.

"I give him a lot of respect and credit for stepping up in that moment with Willie, because that does earn you a lot of credibility around the league and with your teammates and that," Carbery said. "I don't think he's known as a real 'physical' guy; he plays a hard style, but he sort of understood what went on there and why Willie was looking to engage him because of what went on. That's our captain, and so good on him for answering the bell."

Not good for Cakes, though, that the guys played the audio of him saying Ovi never gets hurt, which brought the Cakes curse on once again.

"That's putting some bad mojo in the universe," Carbs laughed.
"We have the same thing in that you never say the word shutout when a goaltender has a goose egg going; you never say it in the coaches' room or locker room, you just do not use the word when a goalie has a shutout going through a period or a couple of periods."

Between now and puck drop Thursday night, Carbs' main focus is figuring out how to replace Ovechkin on the top line, and he would only say that 'we're trying to balance things, so what you're evaluating is someone who can go on that line and continue to play well with Stromer and Pro, while not disrupting chemistry too much on other lines."

Take a listen to his entire visit, as he looks back on their grueling western trip, their upcoming schedule, and more!
