Joe Beninati thinks Alex Ovechkin will set the record this year - and thinks Ovi would prefer to

Joe Beninati will have the call of a record-breaking goal sometime this year, hopefully between now and mid-April as opposed to having to wait until October for Alex Ovechkin to break Wayne Gretzky’s goal-scoring record next season.

And, yes, even Joe B thinks Ovi would like to do it in the next few weeks, as he told BMitch and Finlay on Monday:

But, as Joe also told the guys, the reason Washington is still so successful – besides seeing things like Ovi allowing Aliaksei Protas to take an empty-netter for his first career hatty, showing he’s not pressing to get goals – is that the head coach has them, as Dan Quinn would say, where their feet are.

“It’s a day-to-day thing, and I keep coming back to the mantra that Spencer Carbery has given this team every step of this season: stay in the moment,” Beninati said. “He keeps hammering that home to the guys, and that means focus on Detroit, a team that's really gonna come in desperate to play good hockey tomorrow since they're on the bubble right now with regard to a Wild Card. Stay in the moment, focus on trying to beat them, and things will take care of themselves.”
