John Walton on what Ovi breaking the record means to DC
John Walton has called a lot of Alex Ovechkin goals in his career, and his call of No. 895 will go down in lore as just as iconic as the goal itself (or maybe we’re biased as the radio home of the Caps…) will.
So what did this one mean to Walton to be on the call for it?
And what made that even more crystal clear is the way the crowd reacted at UBS Arena, even if it was a majority of Capitals fans who made the trip to maybe see history.
“It sounded like a home game, and the Caps fans who came were letting it out. I was really moved but I remember in Chicago when he scored 800, and the Blackhawks fan base was so supportive; he scored a hat trick and Hawks fans are throwing hats onto the ice.” Walton said. “He transcends hockey, and in a lot of ways, I think sport. He’s someone who has made everybody else around him better. I knew him when he was 19, and one of the greatest parts of this job is watching these guys grow up and become the people that they become, and Alex has as much or more influence on this entire group.
Everyone that comes in contact with him, we’re all better for it. The moment was so exciting, but the meaning behind it, I think, is what we're all thinking about.
