JUNKIES: Spencer Carbery on keeping Ovi, Caps fresh down the stretch while he chases history

Alex Ovechkin scored in Tuesday’s OT loss to the Jets, putting him at 889 career goals and just two hat tricks away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record. No pressure, Ovi, but Cakes is gonna be in the house on April 6 at the Islanders, which is six games away, so one a game doable?

Cakes even joked about that with Coach Spencer Carbery during Carbs’ weekly visit to the Junkies on Wednesday, and it ended up with coach explaining how he’s keeping Ovi (and others) fresh down the stretch while navigating both this chase and their desire for a long playoff run:

One guy he knows will be with Ovi next year, and for a long time, is Jakob Chychrun, whose well-deserved eight-year extension was announced Tuesday…a few days after Ted Leonsis was seen wearing a Chychrun jersey???

“I was talking to him yesterday about it, but the guys were giving him a hard time because Ted was wearing his jersey, so the guys just assumed like, ‘oh, do you have something to share with us, Chicky?’” Carbs laughed. “He said no, and it was just total coincidence that in the next day, things start to heat up, and that's sort of when the ball got rolling on the final legwork of his deal getting done. But it was just a total coincidence.”
