A record that once looked like it would stand forever has fallen! Alex Ovechkin achieved the unthinkable with an incredible season of scoring to become the NHL's all-time goal king.
With his 42nd goal of the season, Ovechkin scored goal No. 895 of his career to pass Wayne Gretzky. (And then score two more goals to move to 897 for his career before the end of the regular season.)

Here's a look at the final five goals in April from the Great 8's chase!
Career Goal No. 891
On the power play, Ovechkin scored a first-period goal to give the Capitals a 2-0 lead (assists to Dylan Strome, John Carlson) en route to a 4-3 win over the Boston Bruins.
Career Goal No. 892
It would not be Washington's night in Carolina in a 5-1 loss to the Hurricanes, but with seconds remaining in the second period, Ovi netted a power-play goal (Jakob Chychrun, Strome).
Career Goal No. 893, 894
Less than four minutes into the game, Ovechkin scored his 40th goal of the season (Strome, Carlson) to put him one behind Gretzky. And it looked like the record might fall that night in Washington when a third-period power-play goal moved him level with the Great One (Carlson, Andrew Mangipane) to give the Capitals a 4-3 lead over the Chicago Blackhawks before Ryan Leonard scored his first career NHL goal into an empty net.
Career Goal No. 895
With the Capitals down 2-0 to the New York Islanders, a power play opportunity was all Ovechkin needed to score the goal (Tom Wilson, Strome) to move him past Gretzky. The best part: the record of 894 goals for Gretzky came in fun in 1,487 career games. Ovechkin netted the record-breaker in his 1,487th game.
