Tracking Alex Ovechkin Chasing Greatness to 895

After a bit of a slow goal-scoring start to the 2024-25 NHL season, Alex Ovechkin has hit his stride and the red-hot Washington Capitals continue to rack up points during the season's opening month.

And with that good run of form, the Great Eight's chase of Wayne Gretzky's hallowed record of 894 goals — the top of the mountain among all-time career goal scorers — continues to be within reach.

Here the five goals Ovi scored for the Capitals during October 2024.

Career Goal No. 854

After the New Jersey Devils grabbed a 1-0 lead, the Capitals answered twice before, Ovechkin got off the snide in the Capitals' fourth game of the season, scoring on assists from John Carlson and Dylan Strome. Washington would hang on for a 6-5 win in overtime.

Career Goal No. 855

The Capitals grabbed a 4-0 lead on the vising Broad Street Bullies from Philadelphia. But the Flyers showed some real fight, scoring three unanswered. But Washington kept their composure and added a pair of empty net goals, the second of which iced the cake on the 6-3 win from Ovechkin (assisted by Strome).

Career Goal No. 856 and No. 857

It didn't take long for Ovi to net not once, but twice against the New York Rangers in the first period, with the familiar combination of Strome and Aliaksei Protas providing the assists on both occasions. Washington would grab a 5-3 win over the visiting Blueshirts.

Career Goal No. 858

After falling behind 2-1 and then seeing the visiting Montreal Canadiens level the score at three at the tail end of the second period, the Capitals built a 5-3 lead in the second half of the third. That is when Ovechkin ensured there would only be treats and no tricks on the Halloween matchup when he was fed the puck by Strome (after a Protas steal) and pounded it in the net past a sprawling goaltender for his fifth goal of the month. The high-scoring Caps would go on to win 6-3 to run their record to 7-2 on the young season.
