We’ve heard from Jeff Ermann a lot over the last couple weeks as the Kevin Willard saga unfolded in College Park, but today we finally got a positive note, as Buzz Williams was introduced officially as the next head coach of the Terrapins.
And when Ermann joined JP Finlay to discuss the hire after Williams’ introductory presser, JP asked if, looking at resumes, you’d rather have Williams than Willard, and…yup!
So then, that begs the question – even assuming Willard is an upgrade from Kyle Neptune, why would Villanova have wanted Willard so bad?
“That’s been a question of mine, too; it’s strange how they courted him as if he was one of the top coaches in the country. Not to say he's a bad coach, but, I think it came down to relationships,” Ermann said. “I think he's very tight with Jay Wright, he’s been around those Big East circles quite a bit, and those two are comfortable with each other, so that was the guy. And, honestly, the last time they hired Kyle Neptune, who completely bombed, so it's not as they've proven that they know who they should go and hire.”
