The development was revealed ahead of Thursday's festivities by Hall of Famer Frank Thomas, who is part-owner of the charming venue located in Dyersville, Iowa.

According to Thomas, the ballpark will not host an MLB game next season owing to an expansion project that will see the addition of a youth sports complex, including baseball and softball fields for youngsters.

“It’s a lot going on,” Thomas told the Des Moines Register on Wednesday in Dyersville. “They don’t want to come back if the stadium’s not prepared.”

However, Thomas added that it remains possible for an MLB game to return in future years.

The diamond -- which last year saw an epic back-and-forth contest between the Yankees and host White Sox that ended in a thrilling walk-off home run by Chicago's Tim Anderson -- was specially constructed for the so-called "Field of Dreams" game.

The ballpark itself is ringed by temporary stands and cut out of a cornfield, much like the field that was created by Kevin Costner's character in the 1989 Academy Award-nominated flick. Costner was joined by several actors and producers from the movie at least year's event.

The game was a ratings hit for MLB, drawing the most viewers for a regular-season contest in 16 years.

Thomas and a group of partners, including former Dodgers GM Dan Evans, announced last year that they purchased a controlling stake in the business that operates the Iowa site. They subsequently revealed plans to expand the complex to include youth fields, as well as the addition of a boutique hotel.
