A lot of fans seem to like it when players in any sport are mic’ed up during games, and in-game interviews, at least in MLB, are popular during spring training games.
That phenomenon made it to The Masters on Thursday, when ESPN interviewed Rory McIlroy and Max Homa while they were on the course…but we’ve got one Junkie who isn’t feeling it.
“As I’m watching this…more and more people are doing helmet cams and things like that, and dugout interviews, and sometimes that makes me feel like you’re intruding on the action,” EB said on Friday’s show. “Rory McIlroy is trying to complete the career Grand Slam, and all of a sudden, he has his AirPods in his ear and he’s doing commentary! This isn’t the practice range, he’s in the middle of the round and kind of struggling, and he’s doing shtick with the announcers?”
EB admitted that he can’t blame Rory because he sounded like he was looking forward to it, but to him, it was “as inappropriate as watching my parents have sex.”
“It was inappropriate! I consider The Masters to be a holy week, I don’t want to take away their concentration. It’s one thing to do it in a practice round or at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, but not at The Masters!” EB said. “I know a lot of people loved it, but at Majors, I draw the line.”
“Think about all the guys that would never do this…Tiger would never ever do this!” the guys shot back.
Maybe EB had a point, but McIlroy and Homa were all about it, and Homa even said “I’m glad I made my first birdie before I talked you guys.” Still, not feeling it.
“You’re talking to a million people in the middle of a round? This course requires your total concentration,” EB said. “I understand we’re all in on the era of social media, but I thought it was a violation of the sanctity of a major. It was good stuff, but I was uncomfortable the whole time.”
