OF COURSE the first topic on another Friday with Feinstein was Jon Rahm’s decision to sign with LIV Golf for perhaps more than a half-bil, to which John could only say this:
“Wild is a good word, crazy is a good word, and a year ago, unthinkable was a good word,” Feinstein said. “Jon was sort of right behind Rory McIlroy waving the flag for the PGA Tour, but I think like a lot of players, he was very disillusioned when Jay Monahan basically went behind everybody's back and made a deal with the Saudis. Everybody was caught off guard and people didn’t understand why, but Rahm’s a very bright guy, and I think he understood this is a generational deal – but it’s really a blow for the PGA Tour, because supposedly when they announced the ‘merger,’ this was gonna be the end of poaching players, and now everything seems off the table again. So, this is chaos, and the concern, I think, for everybody who wants the PGA Tour to survive has been that we know that LIV's not gonna run out of money, but the Tour could.”
John was on the road this past week working on his Ivy League book, so he’s home and will be watching the Army-Navy game from there because of the book work – which is fine to him because “both teams have had disappointing seasons at 5-6.”
He’s also likely to be watching a lot of Commanders games from home next year after the news that season ticket prices will be raised, and he understands the uproar on that.
“Fans should be upset,” Feinstein said. “Howard Eskin in Philly predicted this right after Harris bought the team, but you have to have a feel for the room – and this says to me that he doesn’t have a feel for the room, at least not yet. I think he benefited when he first bought the team from all the anger that was directed at Dan Snyder, and I think the reason he hasn't fired Ron Rivera yet is because he doesn't want to appear Snyder-like, but when you're 4-9 and your stadium is a dump, you don't raise ticket prices – if anything, I would cut ticket prices and parking. Who is advising him on this? The fan base was angry before the sale, and then they danced in the streets and came to the games, and now you’re going to raise ticket prices?”
