Marlins’ Aguilar responds to ‘bottom feeders’ diss: ‘We’ve got a flight tomorrow’

The Marlins may have a new rallying cry. Here’s first baseman Jesus Aguilar (cigar in hand) responding to the legion of doubters who predicted Miami, now headed to Houston for a second-round series with Atlanta, would be watching from home this October.

This is what happens when you give the Marlins, who have never lost a postseason series in their 27-year history (Friday ran their record to a perfect 7-0), bulletin board material. The “Bottom Feeders” t-shirt worn by Aguilar references a quote from Phillies analyst Ricky Bottalico, who used that phrase to describe the Marlins on a TV broadcast earlier this season. Ironically enough, the star of Friday’s series clincher at Wrigley Field was none other than Sixto Sanchez (six strikeouts over five shutout innings), who the Marlins acquired last year in a trade that sent All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto to Philadelphia. Meanwhile the Phillies dropped seven of their final eight games to miss the postseason, extending their playoff drought to nine straight seasons.

“Don’t get mad at us,” said Aguilar, who finished off the Cubs with a two-run homer in Friday’s triumph. “We’ve got a flight tomorrow.”

Including this year, the Marlins, who posted an NL-worst 57-105 record last season, have only qualified for the playoffs on three occasions. The other two times they won the World Series. Just saying.
