John Feinstein thinks the whole hoopla around Monumental’s announced move to Virginia is nothing but a bluff, Leonsis playing the Commonwealth or figuring the deal will get shot down but going forward to get the money he wants out of the District.
What do the Junkies think?
“I mean, that's obviously been something to consider, but I never strongly considered it as a bluff,” EB said. “I guess it’s win-win for him; if the Red Sea just parts for him, and everything falls his way and the City Council and the Governor are behind it and it's just clear sailing, he’s gonna have this unbelievable thing. But if there are hurdles and DC comes up on their offer, it’s a win-win, he goes, ‘okay, you know what? It's just gonna be to take too long.’”
“The way I thought about it was the only way it doesn't happen is if there are these hurdles that you speak of, you know, the General Assembly or whoever votes on this blocks it, and it just disappears that way,” Bish replied. “But I always thought to myself, if he really wants to do this and Virginia has committed so much money – the Amazon thing kind of backfired and he wants the state of the art facility right there on the river, so I just figured he wanted to do it and if he really wanted to take his team to Virginia, he was gonna do it.”
Will there be backlash, though?
“If he ends up staying in DC, I think more people will be happy that he stays in DC, then will be pissed that he's not going to Virginia,” EB said. “All those Virginia people that are excited that they don't have to drive into DC anymore, I get it, but they’re used to it, they've done it their whole lives.”
