Andrew Golden gives BMitch & Finlay a couple early ideas for the Nationals' No. 1 pick

The Nationals didn't leave the Winter Meetings with any big free agent signings, but they DID win the MLB Draft Lottery to secure the No. 1 pick in the 2025 Draft.

"It's a huge deal, obviously, because you have every option you want and you can figure out whatever you want to get," WaPo's Andrew Golden told BMitch & Finlay Wednesday. "An exciting time, and obviously the Nationals have had two No. 1 picks in the past that turned out pretty well in Bryce Harper and Stephen Strasburg – doesn't get much better than that – and you're adding another talent and prospect in the system."

It's way too early to hone in, but the Nationals' target could be the younger brother of another local phenom.

"Ethan Holliday, Jackson's brother and son of Matt Holliday, is a big name at the top of the draft board, and then there's an outfielder from Texas A&M, Jace Lavalette," Golden said. "Those are kind of two guys who I've heard a lot mentioned in terms of the top pick, but obviously you're really far away and you have to see how those seasons go."

Mike Rizzo said on MLB Network he's all about the most impactful player, but what will they be looking for as this offseason and free agency plays out?

"The key, when you look at their offseason needs, they need some power on the corner infield and at designated hitter, and adding any of those positions will be an upgrade," Golden said. "They were 29th in slugging and near the bottom of the league in home runs, so they haven't performed super well when it comes to hitting for power, and that's kind of where the league is shifted towards."

Take a listen to Golden's entire call-in above, as he and JP also discuss the impasse between the rebuild and ownership's perceived unwillingness to spend, how realistic Christian Walker is as a target, and more!
