Cade Cavalli’s suspension has been lowered from seven games to five upon appeal, and he started serving the suspension in the Nationals’ series opener with Houston on Monday.
He will be eligible to return on Sunday to start the Nats’ first half finale against the Yankees.
Cavalli was originally suspended seven games for the fracas with Willson Contreras in Boston last Tuesday that led to multiple ejections, but he appealed and the decision was made Monday evening.
Miles Mikolas was also suspended five games and appealed, but there is no word on his appeal yet.
Cavalli and Mikolas pitched Sunday and Monday, respectively, and with an off-day Thursday, the Nats can use Andrew Alvarez and Foster Griffin in the final two games against Houston, have Cavalli for Sunday, and then have Zack Littell Friday with a TBD (perhaps Mikolas?) on Saturday.
The Nationals cannot recall another player to take Cavalli’s spot, however, so they will play the entire Houston series and the first two games against the Yankees with 25 players.
