The Nationals now have three All-Stars, as LHP Foster Griffin was added to the Mid-Summer Classic on Saturday night.

He will replace Pirates righty Braxton Ashcraft on the NL roster.

“It’s a huge honor,” Griffin told the media. “I’m super proud, super happy. I appreciate all the support from everybody – from my teammates, sports staff, front office.”

“We would be nowhere near where we are without Foster Griffin on this team,” manager Blake Butera added. “And I couldn’t be happier for him.”

The 30-year-old has had a remarkable season, going 10-2 with a 2.77 ERA in 110 1/3 innings over 19 starts. He’s sixth in the NL in innings and batting average against (.210) ninth in ERA and 10th in strikeouts with 109.

And, in his last seven starts, he’s 4-0 with a 1.25 ERA.

Still, Griffin had to sweat out until the final days to realize he would be a first-time All-Star this season, his first back in the States after three years in Japan.

““I’m later in my career, and it happened now,” Griffin said. “I’m super grateful for that and super proud of that. Just looking back at all the time and effort and work I’ve put in, it’s a huge honor and I’m excited for it. I felt like everything happens for a reason, and I knew it was so much out of my hands that I couldn’t control it. Me getting upset about it isn’t going to do anything. If it was going to happen, great. If not, I was going to get some time with family, and it was going to be a great time.”

Griffin gives the Nationals three All-Stars for the first time since 2021, when Juan Soto, Max Scherzer, Kyle Schwarber, and Trea Turner all got nods.
