Jeimer Candelario is now in Chicago, and so is our buddy Boog Sciambi, who joined the Junkies Thursday to discuss how Candelario has done in his first two games as a Cub, Shohei Ohtani’s future, and more around MLB.
However, he also talked a bit about the Nats, and even with Candelario headed to Chicago, Sciambi is but isn’t surprised that was the only deal the Nationals made.
“I know this sounds cliché, but it’s neve quite as easy as you thing. The one thing that’s curious to me is that baseball ops people are often risk-averse, so they hold on to their prospects, so it’s not quite as easy – especially the lower-payroll teams,” Sciambi said. “They’re just not willing to take chances, so I’m not saying it as far as him, I’m saying you’re not always going to find a trade partner because some teams are not willing to give up X or Y. You know the Nationals are trying to get cost-effective controllable players, and it’s not always easy.”
That said, Sciambi also is surprised by one thing we DON’T see at the deadlines.
“I’m always surprised there’s not more at the deadline, and I’m also surprised we never really have buyers and buyers as partners, where they work something out to both fill a need,” Sciambi said. “It’s rare that it’s ever as sexy as you hope it will be.”
And as for the potential Nationals sale?
“I can’t tell you that I’ve heard anything there; it’s a funny one, because you look at the business of baseball, and the most money is made right at this point where you sell the franchise,” Sciambi said. “I have to think someone will step up and want to buy this team, but I’ve heard nothing.”
