Nationals DFA OF Stone Garrett to open roster spot for Kyle Finnegan
The Washington Nationals have made their signing of RHP Kyle Finnegan official, and to make room on the 40-man roster, they have designated OF Stone Garrett for assignment.
Garrett, 29, had just six MLB plate appearances in 2024 but authored a .249/.348/.333 slash line in Triple-A, starting the season a little late because he was still recovering from a gruesome ankle injury suffered at Yankee Stadium in mid-2023 and ensuing surgery that August.
The righty hitter does have a career .276/.341/.492 slash line in 315 at-bats over parts of three seasons with the Nationals and D-Backs, but with James Wood, Dylan Crews, and Jacob Young set in the outfield and Alex Call likely to be the fourth outfielder – with Robert Hassell III looking to start the year in Triple-A – it was Garrett who was expendable for the Finnegan spot.
The Nationals have five days to trade him before he would go on waivers for up to 48 hours, and if he clears all that, the team can release him or outright him to Triple-A. Any team that acquires Garrett would get two minor-league options and a player who is at least two full seasons away from arbitration eligibility.
