Nationals' Jacob Young named an NL Gold Glove finalist
Nationals center fielder Jacob Young was named one of the three finalists for the NL Gold Glove Award at that position on Tuesday, joining defending winner Brenton Doyle of the Rockies and Milwaukee’s Blake Perkins as the contenders.
Young, who played 149 games in center in his ostensible rookie season, led all MLB center fielders with 18 Runs Prevented and +20 Outs Above Average, and he was tied for third in the NL with Doyle with 11 Defensive Runs Saved. He also had six outfield assists, which was sixth in the NL.
He does face stiff competition in Doyle, the 2023 Gold Glover, whose +16 OAA tied Tampa Bay’s Jose Siri for second in MLB and 14 runs prevented were third behind Young and Siri. Doyle also had more assists (8 vs.
5) than Young.
And don’t count out Perkins, who had +11 OAA, 9 runs prevented, and 8 DRS, Top 10 in the NL in all three categories.
Young is looking to become the Nationals’ third Gold Glove winner since the Expos moved to DC, and first since Adam LaRoche won it at first base in 2012.
The winners will be announced on Nov. 3 on a special edition of ESPN’s “Baseball Tonight” at 8:30 p.m.
