Amid a roster rebuild, the Washington Nationals announced Tuesday they have agreed to terms on a multi-year contract extension with manager Dave Martinez.

“Dave Martinez represents the Washington Nationals organization with class on and off the field, and we are thrilled that he will continue to serve as manager,” Nationals owner Mark D. Lerner said in a team release.

The club did not disclose the terms of the extension with The Athletic reporting the deal is a two-year extension with a club option for a third year. The Nationals, who remain for sale, are also close to an extension of a similar length for general manager Mike Rizzo.

Martinez, in his sixth season with Washington, since he was hired after the 2017 campaign, has gone 378-455 (.454) in the regular season, a record marred by now four-straight losing seasons (the Nats currently stand at 57-68) after the club won the 2019 World series.

However, there have been signs of progress during the 2023 season with the Nationals already surpassing last year's win total and likely to eclipse 2021's total. And since June 24, the club has gone 29-21 and have won seven in their last nine and 12 of their last 17.

“We are especially proud of the way the club has played since the end of June, and the team’s play is a direct reflection of Davey’s leadership," Lerner's statement continued. "He is determined, passionate and the right person to lead our current group of players as well as the next wave of talent coming to Washington, D.C.”

Martinez, in his sixth season with Washington since he was hired after the 2017 campaign, has gone 378-455 (.454) in the regular season, a record marred by now four-straight losing seasons after the club won the 2019 World Series during which the organization has entered a rebuilding phase that has seen the farm system go from one of baseball's worst ranked to one of the best.
