The Nationals’ outfield shuffle continued Wednesday, as the team announced they have requested release waivers on Joey Wiemer, who was at Triple-A Rochester.
Any team can claim him and add him to their 40-man roster, but if he clears, he will become a free agent by Friday.
Wiemer started the season in the majors and went on an early tear, going 6-for-6 with two walks in the season-opening series against the Cubs. He cooled off significantly after April 1, though, with just one multi-hit game after that date following four in his first five games, and he was optioned to Triple-A in mid-May with a .286/.398/.514 slash line.
The 27-year-old similarly cratered in Rochester, slashing .196/.277/.257 with a 31% strikeout rate in 42 games, and he still owns just a .216/.296/.380 slash line as a major-leaguer in his career.
The release waivers now mean Rochester has turned over an entire outfield in the last 48 hours; the Nats traded Christian Franklin to Baltimore on Monday, and called up Andrew Pinckney Tuesday after James Wood went on the IL.
