The Robert Hassell III era is officially over in the Nats organization.
Washington announced Thursday that they have traded Hassell III to the Pittsburgh Pirates for cash considerations or a player to be named later.
Hassell III, 24, was designated for assignment on July 5 when the Nationals called up pitcher Eddy Yean, and at the time was hitting .215 with a .593 OPS, two homers, and 21 RBI in 63 games at Triple-A Rochester.
It was a departure from the .310/.383/.456 Triple-A slash line that earned him a full-time promotion last August, where he ended up hitting .223 in 70 overall games in DC.
Hassell cleared waivers last week and was outrighted back to Triple-A, but now, he heads to Pittsburgh, where he is not on the 40-man roster and ticketed for Triple-A Indianapolis.
The Pirates would have to add Hassell back to the 40-man roster by this offseason to avoid losing him as a minor-league free agent, and if they do so, he would have one minor-league option year remaining.
