The Yankees are reportedly acquiring some much-needed offense with just over 24 hours to go until the trade deadline.
According to Spencer Nusbaum of The Athletic, the Yanks and Nationals are "trending" towards a trade that would send Luis Garcia Jr. to the Bronx. Joel Sherman of the New York Post also reported a link between the two teams and Garcia at the center of a potential deal.
Garcia, a 26-year-old infielder, is a New York native who would bring the Yanks some much-needed pop to their depleted lineup. In 357 at-bats this season, Garcia is batting .283 with 23 home runs and an .873 OPS. He would immediately become one of the top producing bats in a Yankee lineup still missing Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Cody Bellinger.
Garcia has spend his entire seven-year career with the Nationals, holding a career .732 OPS. His bat has taken a major leap in 2026, as his .560 slugging percentage leads the league, while his 23 home runs already surpassed his previous career high of 18 in 2024.Defensively, Garcia has only played first base this year, spending the rest of his time as a DH. With Stanton set to face Carlos Rodon and Clarke Schmidt in live BP, the DH spot could be filled relatively soon. That leaves the defensive options limited for the Yankees, at least as currently constructed. Ben Rice would be the everyday first baseman if Stanton returns to a regular DH role, and the only other infield position Garcia has extensive experience with is second base (he played 129 games there last season). That could complicate things with Jazz Chisholm in the fold, so the Yanks will have some shuffling to do.
Until Stanton returns, the Yanks could make Garcia the first baseman and Rice the DH, and use Paul Goldschmidt at first base against lefty starting pitchers, as Garcia is far better against righties.
Regardless, the addition of Garcia provides the Bombers with some much-needed offense to complement their dominant starting rotation as the team continues its quest to regain first place in the AL East.
