Nats trade LHP Andrew Chafin, RHP Luis Garcia to Angels for two prospects

The Nationals’ trade deadline sale continued just prior to Wednesday’s series finale in Houston, as the team announced they have dealt RHP Luis Garcia and LHP Andrew Chafin to the Los Angeles Angels for LHP Jake Eder and 1B Sam Brown.

Eder has been optioned to Triple-A Rochester, and to fortify the bullpen for the series finale in Houston, the Nats recalled RHP Zach Brzykcy from Rochester.

Chafin, 35, started this season in Triple-A with the Tigers but joined the Nats in May. He was 1-1 with a 2.70 ERA in 20 innings over 26 relief appearances.

Garcia, 38, signed with the Nats earlier this month after being DFA by the Dodgers. He appeared in 10 games, allowing one earned run over 10 innings.

Eder, 26, was a 2020 draft pick of the Marlins, and made his MLB debut last season with the White Sox before being dealt to the Angels at the beginning of this season. He had a 4.91 ERA in 18 1/3 innings over eight relief outings for the Halos, but was a starter for much of the season at Triple-A Salt Lake, posting a 6.11 ERA in 63 1/3 innings over 13 starts.

Brown, the Angels’ 12th-round pick in 2023, is a lefty/lefty who has spent both of his pro seasons at Double-A Rocket City. The 23-year-old has slashed .226/.320/.325 with none home runs and 93 RBI in 218 games for the Trash Pandas.

Brzykcy, 26, returns for his third Major League stint of the season. He’s appeared in 23 games out of the bullpen, going 0–1 with a 7.40 ERA.
