Everything in this world has its price and hat goes for every sports franchise in Washington D.C.
Ted Leonsis, the owner of the Washington Wizards of the NBA and Washington Capitals of the NHL, has offered more than $2 billion to buy the Washington Nationals of MLB, according to a report from the Washington Post.
The Lerner family, who announced they were exploring a sale of the Nationals in April 2022, received Leonis' bid late last year, the Post reported citing three people with knowledge of the situation.
It is not clear, according to the Post, if the bid was rejected or simply did not receive a response from the Lerners, but the two sides have remained in contact.
Leonsis was immediately considered a front-runner to purchase the Nats after the Lerner family announced they were looking into a sale, and it was reported he was reportedly in talks with the Lerners almost instantly.
The Wizards and Caps owner was not the only suitor, and the Post had reported there were five potential bidders. Post columnist Bary Svrluga reported in July 2022 that two potential bidders "visited the Nationals in person, touring Nationals Park and sitting through presentations from high-level club staff in baseball and business."
The Lerner family has maintained that they will continue to operate the Nationals indefinitely in the absence of any sale.
"This is an exploratory process, so there is no set timetable or expectation of a specific outcome," Mark Lerner told the Post in April 2022. "The organization is as committed as ever to their employees, players, fans, sponsors and partners and to putting a competitive product on the field."
