All during Friday’s show, producer Darris Dameron helped Grant & Danny celebrate their 10th anniversary by playing some messages of well-wishes from notable DC personalities, most of which brought back some memories – good or bad – associated with a decade on the air.
Sean Doolittle’s, however, was perhaps the most poignant for the guys, as Sean, a good friend of the program since his days of doing a weekly hit in 2019, gave them some good-natured ribbing, and brought back a flood of emotions from the Nats’ World Series run.
“That was one of the coolest things we got to do: evenings with Sean Doolittle at the DC Improv,” Danny recalled. “He was hysterical, and it was a blast. We were cutting it up, I was doing the Bob Carpenter and doing Ray Knight shtick for him, and it was 90 minutes of cracking up and shucking and jiving.”
‘Sean Doolittle, class act, and very kind of him. Did not have to do that, but that was very, very, very cool, Doolittle and everyone who was taking part today and helping us to celebrate and making this a pretty cool day,” Grant replied.
GP just planned to mention the anniversary and Danny had one joke planned, and Grant did at least look up the 10th anniversary gift – it’s diamond jewelry in modern times, according to Hallmark, and, oh, yeah, remember when the Nats and Caps both had parades within 18 monthsr?
“Man, 2019, how about two championships we got to cover?” Grant said. “I’m not saying this to be funny, but if I had to guess, we probably won't get to cover two in the next 10 years. But, there are people like the Junkies who were on the air for 23 years before they got to cover one. It just so happens that a handful of years into our existence, the Caps break through, and the next year, it’s the Nationals. I would love for you and I to be on the air when the Commanders are good. That would be amazing.”
“That would be fun, and I would enjoy that,” Danny said. “You know how sometimes an iPhone brings up memories? Mine brought up pictures of you and I from on the field in Houston before the World Series. What did you do today? Oh, we did the pregame show before the World Series for the hometown baseball team!”
As Grant recalled, the show has taken the guys to a Stanley Cup Final, a World Series, and Super Bowls on Radio Row, among other cool events, and let both check off a bucket list item when they went to Wrigley Field for the playoffs.
“It was like, where are we going to do the show from? And it’s like seven feet from Wrigley Field in this little quad they have set up out there, and we were like, what life is this? What planet are we on? Like, this is what we do!” Danny recalled.
Oh, and of course, there had to be mention of them going to a Chicago steakhouse and gorging on a meal gifted to them by Chicago’s program director…and yeah, Danny gained some vacation weight, for sure.
“I can put away food like it's no one's business, everyone knows that is part of my branding,” Danny said, “but I don’t know that I've been more Kendall Fuller than I was that night. I don't know that I've ever been that swelled up and inflated. It was like when Bugs Bunny’s hand grows, my whole body was like that. I was filled with steak every inch.”
And, of course, Grant remembered the exact specifics of the game and the situation around it, because that’s what GP does…and that’s what makes these two so good together, and a staple of our airwaves now for a decade.
Happy anniversary again, guys!
